Service Learning

The well know proverb “no man is an island” can be expanded to include “no school is an island”. Schools, and therefore students, are part of a local, regional and global community. Where studying is essentially self-centred, it is valuable to also find time to consider one’s place in the community and how one can contribute to this community. Carrying our service projects makes students aware of their connections to the world around them but equally to the value they have to their community. The required practice of reflection during and after the projects of service learning will help students understand the value of the process and how this can also be used in academic projects.
